How did the Early Church Preach and Teach Scripture?

JohnChrysostom
I just came across a series of books by Hughes Oliphant Old, which examine how the church over the centuries has understood preaching and teaching the Scriptures. I always run into people that are expository only folks, and I ask them to show me the biblical evidence to prove that we can only preaching exegetically verse by verse through a book, then they stop bugging me.

Mark Driscoll did a lecture series on the topic of different types of preaching. Thematic, Narrative, Exegetical, Textual, and Topical.
Here is the question:

What type of preaching best suits a missional church, and why?

the link to those books are here: Vol. I, Vol. II, Vol. III, Vol. IV, Vol. V, Vol. VI.

Keller On Preaching

If you have not checked out the Gospel Coalition’s new website, you need to. They have posted 5 videos from their recent conference.
Here is a quote from Tim Keller’s talk entitled “What Does Gospel Centered Ministry Look Like?”:

“The basic subject of every sermon ought to be Jesus! It Doesn’t matter what passage, It doesn’t matter if its the Old Testament or the New Testament. Its got to be about Jesus…My friend Sinclair Ferguson says that most evangelical ministers don’t preach Christ, not only do they not preach Christ in the old test most of them don’t preach Christ in the New Testament.”
